Fedora 5

Download links

  • You can dowload versions for various platform from http://fedora.redhat.com/Download/ including POWER = ppc
  • Both a set of CDROMs and a single 3.5 GB DVDROM are avaiable.
  • Or order a set for people with poor Internet connection bandwidth.

Installation

  • Fedora 5 works well on my pSeries based on POWER5 processor via a dumb terminal console
  • I have found problems installing the DVD version (part way through it reported errors in the packages), which I then avoided by booting from CDROM and the doing a NFS install - this worked perfectly every time.
    • This problem my have been just the particular DVD that you get with a pSeries p505 - your mileage may vary.
    • You can start an NFS install by using - the at the boot prompt: askmethod
  • Also when installing into a virtual VIO client (virtual disk), you need the IBM Virtual SCSI client driver installed.
    • To get this installed add the boot prompt: nostorage
    • Then when asked select the POWER5 (hit 'p' when you get to the driver list) and select the ibmvscsic device driver and then you can install OK
  • It seems to find the virtual Ethernet driver without any help
  • So at the boot prompt type:
    • boot: linux64 nostorage askmethod
